Jan. 20, 2021 – Biden Pauses Most Deportations for 100 Days

In an inauguration day memo (Jan. 20, 2021), the Department of Homeland Security was directed to halt most deportations for 100 days. The action is being taken “to ensure we have a fair and effective immigration enforcement system focused on protecting national security, border security, and public safety,” according to a DHS press release.

The moratorium excludes those suspected of terrorism or espionage, those whose deportation is needed to protect national security, those who have crossed the border after Nov. 1, 2020, and those who have been convicted of an aggravated felony and pose a threat to public safety.
