Nov. 1954 – Ellis Island Closes

“In November of 1954 the last detainee, a Norwegian merchant seaman
named Arne Peterssen was released, and Ellis Island officially closed.
In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson declared Ellis Island part of the
Statue of Liberty National Monument.”
