Aug. 2, 2021 – Biden Administration Will Maintain Trump Policy of Turning away Migrants during Pandemic

The policy, called Title 42 and used to turn away about 100,000 migrants at the southern border, will remain in place during the pandemic.

In the announcement of the extension, the CDC stated: “introduction of such noncitizens, regardless of their country of origin, migrating through Canada and Mexico into the United States creates a serious danger of the introduction of COVID-19 into the United States.”

The ACLU will move forward with a lawsuit against the policy. ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt stated: “The administration made repeated public statements that it just needed some time to build back the asylum system the Trump administration depleted. We gave them seven months. Time is up.”
